Metro Art Presents Flora Urbana - A Soundscape by Green-House
July 26-August 26
Click here to stream or download the FREE 16 minute soundscape
Part of An Environmental Music Series from Metro Art and Leaving Records
Flora Urbana is an exploration of the anthropogenic environments in which we live. With the intention to dissolve the illusory barriers between humans and nature, Green-House utilized field recordings of small pockets of "natural" sounds as they walked through densely populated city parks. The field recordings are blended with software synthesizers, samplers, and virtual instruments to symbolize the potential harmony that can be achieved between us and the rest of the ecosystem.

Metro Art Presents Palmy, The Sidewalk Palm Tree - A Soundscape by The Growth Eternal
June 25-July 25
Click here to stream or download the FREE 22 minute soundscape
Part of An Environmental Music Series from Metro Art and Leaving Records
Palmy is a little palm tree. And they're growing up, just like you! This song is about both of you growing up. Palmy wrote it after they saw you walking by them. You were on your way to Union Station. Does Palmy's song sound like a journey to Union Station to you?
Inspired by the sidewalk landscapes of Los Angeles and the way a child might experience the natural world on a daily walk, Palmy, the sidewalk palm tree is written from the point-of-view of a sproutling that has rooted itself on a small patch of earth. It watches people on their way to places the tree can only imagine from the sights and sounds that surround it. The soundscape was created using ambient field recordings, synthesizer, three plants using PlantWave and a dog.

Metro Art Presents To All Trains - A Soundscape by Celia Hollander
August 26-September 26
Click here to stream or download the FREE 19 minute soundscape
Part of An Environmental Music Series from Metro Art and Leaving Records
"To All Trains" takes its inspiration from Union Station as the largest railroad terminal hub in the western part of the U.S. with approximately 110,000 people passing through every day. The piece begins by exploring the perspectives of being an individual navigating a crowd while simultaneously viewing the organized chaos of a swarm from a distance, such as observing a beehive. As Union Station connects travelers to local and international destinations, the soundscape expands in frequency range and instrumentation to explore the harmonies of being a part of a complex system with many moving parts.
Resisting the binary of ‘natural’ and ‘artificial,’ the soundscape merges digital and acoustic sound sources and processes. "To All Trains" is an expression of striving to fathom the full scope of the interdependent networks that our species inhabits, creates and embodies, as a foundation for sustainability.
Presented in collaboration with Leaving Records.
Written, performed, and produced by Celia Hollander

In 2021, Metro Art Presents teamed up with Los Angeles-based Leaving Records to ask four artists who draw inspiration from the natural landscape to create original music soundscapes evoking experiences of nature and transportation in Los Angeles, with Union Station at its center.
We'll close the series, and transition back to live events, with this performance individually featuring the four artists in Union Station's beautiful North Patio:
NAILAH HUNTER is a multi-instrumentalist and composer from Los Angeles combining harp, synth, found sounds, and voice to create reflective sonic landscapes.
THE GROWTH ETERNAL stems from artist Byron Crenshaw’s direct experience and interest in bringing together disparate parts of the self--a Tulsa-born, Dallas-taught, Black-living, jazz-trained bassist and spiritual being who currently lives in Koreatown.
GREEN-HOUSE, the project of Los Angeles based artist Olive Ardizoni, crafts songs that find freedom through simplicity. As a non-binary artist, they hope to create a space with fewer barriers as both a performer and a listener.
CELIA HOLLANDER is Los Angeles based composer and artist working with audio, scores, performance, installation and text who critically engages how the act of listening can shape temporal perception, generate narratives, question cultural infrastructures and cultivate social connection.
Masks will be required as mandated by County of Los Angeles Public Health guidelines. Go Metro to the event! Take the B Line (Red), D Line (Purple), J Line (Silver) or L Line (Gold) directly to Union Station. Plan your trip on the Transit app.

Metro Art Presents x the Autry Versos y Besos with Las Colibrí
Mother's Day Evening ~ Sunday 5/9 @ 7pm
Airing online only on Metro, Metro Art, Union Station and the Autry Facebook Channels and Union Station and Metro YouTube Channels
All-female ensemble Mariachi Las Colibrí is the centerpiece of this original Mother’s Day performance of Versos y Besos (verses and kisses), which reimagines living archives and women’s history linking poetry, place and sound.
Inspired by archival materials of the composer and singer, Manuela C. Garcia (1867-1931), currently on display as part of What’s Her Story: Women in the Archives at the Autry Museum of the American West, the filmed performance is presented in partnership with Autry After Hours and staged in Union Station’s historic Ticketing Hall.
Garcia was born on Los Angeles Street to a family of musicians and lived much of her life in the vicinity of Downtown Los Angeles. From memory, she recorded to wax cylinder more than 100 songs for the journalist and ethnographer Charles Fletcher Lummis which are now recognized as mariachi standards, sharing a sonic legacy that resounds today.
The program also includes a reading of an original poem by Amy Shimshon-Santo, accompanied by musician Nancy Sanchez, which reflects on Garcia’s life and recovered story.
Celebrate the day with the powerful voices of Las Colibrí and Shimshon-Santo as they creatively return Manuela Garcia’s story to the heart of downtown Los Angeles.

PASSAGEWAY ART GALLERY PHOTO EXHIBIT DEBUTS AT UNION STATION

“Deep Connections,” a new photo exhibition featuring the otherworldly black and white images of artist Ken Karagozian, is now on display in the Passageway Art Gallery. For the first time ever, Gallery images will also be accessible online.
Karagozian’s intimate photographs chronicle a unique view of Los Angeles through the documentation of Metro subway construction over the last three decades. His dramatic images balance the humanity of the workers, the enormity of the machinery and the intricacy of the jobs in the complex underground of the Metro system of subterranean Los Angeles. Karagozian’s work brilliantly showcases the elaborate choreography happening beneath Angelenos’ feet in the unfamiliar environment of underground tunneling in the city.

Kizomba is both a dance and a style of music, which developed in Angola in the 1980s and 1990s. The dance derives strongly from zouk, a Caribbean Carnivalesque quick rhythm originating in the islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique, and which is reminiscent of reggaeton and Brazilian funk. Zouk, which means party or festival, drifted to Angola, where it mixed with traditional Angolan music and semba, the Angolan origin of Brazilian samba, resulting in kizomba.

Thanks to the brilliant work of director Siodmak, CRISS CROSS remains perhaps the most darkly poetic rendering of amour fou in film noir. Burt Lancaster and Dan Duryea plot a daring heist, while vying for the sensual Yvonne DeCarlo. Union Station and Bunker Hill locations abound and don’t miss a young Tony Curtis burning up the floor of a downtown nightclub!
